Mid-America Press Institute announces fall seminars

Mike Reilley, Google News Labs Trainer and Business Development Director, will lead two seminars for Mid-America Press Institute, providing hands-on learning using tools for digital news gathering, data analysis and visualization, and mobile reporting.

The seminars are scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 28, at The Daily Herald, Arlington Heights, Ill., and Monday, Oct. 17 at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Registration is $25 and includes lunch. To register, email MPI Executive Director John Ryan at

Workshop documents will be posted online, and self-guided followup online lesson module links will be provided to attendees.

Topics: Get an overview of Fusion Tables, maps and charts, data scraping, public data explorer, responsive embeds and more. Hands-on exercises.
Length: 120 minutes (or break for lunch and resume)

1 p.m. ­ Lunch

1:40 ­  Advanced Google Tools II: Telling Stories
Topics: Learn to apply Google Earth, Street View, StorySpheres in reporting and digital packages. Hands-on exercises.
Length: 90 minutes

3:10 ­ Break

3:20 ­ Mobile Reporting Tools 
Topics: Innovative and easy-to-use storytelling apps (list to be provided to attendees in advance for download). Hands-on exercises.
Length: 60 minutes
