The Illinois Press Foundation (IPF) has created several ways for you to help the Illinois Press Association provide education and information to its members and the general public. The IPF has created four campaigns - ACORN, Bricks, Fourth Estate Society and Memorials - to fulfill its vision of continuing our industry’s commitment to integrity and service.

ACORN (Advertising COtributions Reward Newspapers) symbolizes a seed for the future of Illinois newspapers --- a seed that will grow in the Illinois Press Foundation’s Scholastic Journalism Institute, the First Amendment Center, Newspapers in Education Programs, Literacy Programs and the Newspaper Education Center.

Through the voluntary ACORN campaign, we are asking newspaper members to donate 52 inches of advertising at their national rate to the Illinois Press Foundation. This tax deductible contribution allows you to make a donation to help newspapers not only survive, but prosper --- without ever writing a check.

You authorize the foundation to deduct the amount of your pledge from your monthly IPAS ad checks. IPAS sells advertising into your newspaper. Ad Check deductions will be taken monthly until the annual pledge amount is reached.

If IPAS does not sell the advertising into your newspaper, you will not be expected to make up the difference in cash --- unless, of course, you choose to do so.

Since 1982, the Illinois Press Foundation (IPF) has helped the Illinois Press Association provide education and information to its members and the general public.

The IPF is helping to create the next generation of newspapers through our statewide headquarters in Springfield. The facility provides the resources, technology, people and vision to advance the governmental, educational and business missions of the Illinois Press Association and the Illinois Press Foundation.

Ongoing member support will allow the foundation to fulfill its vision of continuing our industry’s commitment to integrity and service. With this in mind, the IPF Recognition Bricks will serve as an evolving and lasting tribute to volunteers and friends of the Illinois newspaper industry.

The walkway welcomes visitors with a visible illustration of the diverse strength of Illinois newspapers. Through your donation, we will engrave one of the 1,000 bricks with your name, your company name, or the name of a loved one. This pathway will serve as a reminder of the many individuals who have contributed to the success of Illinois newspapers.

Furthermore, the IPF Recognition Bricks serve as a means of remembrance to express congratulations or thanks or to remember a departed friend or family member. This is a unique opportunity for each individual newspaper person to help further the mission of the Illinois Press Foundation in a permanent and personalized way.

   IPF launches Fourth Estate Society

The Illinois Press Foundation this month launched the Fourth Estate Society as a funding mechanism to support journalism education.

Most of the giving programs that the IPF has are geared toward newspapers, larger companies and grant programs, Kim Filson, director, said. The Fourth Estate Society establishes an organization at a personal level.

Newspaper people tend to share a really strong bond with their industry, she noted. They don't have newspaper jobs; they are newspaper people. And many of them want to share their successes with future generations of journalists and pass along the passion that they have for newspapers.

At the same time, journalism programs in Illinois high schools have suffered. Filson said the IPF helps keep student publications alive for the benefit of the industry, and the Fourth Estate Society is one way that individuals can support that cause.

Jerry Reppert, president of the IPF, was the first to join the Society. "The ACORN fund raising program has sustained the Illinois Press Foundation for several years. Now, increased program activities demand greater funding. The Fourth Estate Society is a wonderful way to support the Foundation. I encourage all IPA members to join me in membership."

There are five levels of annual memberships starting with $50 per year up to a $1,000 plus a $2,500 "lifetime membership" option.

In developing the funding levels, Dave Bennett, executive director of the IPA, noted that it was important to keep the membership amounts low enough that anyone can afford to join the Society. From entry-level reporters to those who have retired, membership is extended to anyone who has an interest in furthering the goals of the Society, he said.

Members receive a certificate of membership, public recognition, IPF reports and invitations to special events sponsored by the foundation and during dinners/receptions at Illinois Press Association conventions.

The revenue generated by the Society funds protection efforts for the First Amendment, literacy efforts and journalism scholarships for students and working journalists.

The IPF was founded in 1982 as the charitable arm of the IPA. The IPA is the largest state newspaper association in the country with more than 600 weekly and daily newspaper members.
