Chicago Sun-Times practices social distancing

As people across Illinois and the U.S. are being asked to keep a social distance from each other to help slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, the Chicago Sun-Times has found an interesting way to promote that practice to its readers.

The Sun-Times today unveiled a redesigned masthead that separates its red Chicago flag star from the nameplate. The star now floats above the masthead, at a distance, of course. The mast also includes the tagline, "Be a social distancing star. Stay home, stay safe, stay six feet apart when you must go outside."

The Sun-Times intends to keep the spaced-out masthead for the duration of the pandemic.

We think this is an effective way for a local newspaper to provide a daily reminder to its readers of the importance of social distancing. If your newspaper does something similar, let us know, and we'll share your work on this website as well as in social media posts! Email your designs to Jeff Rogers, Illinois Press Foundation director, at jrogers@illinoispress.org.
