Gerald Burke poses for an undated photo with his wife, Susan. Burke and Susan were married for 45 years, after a friend of Burke's from college, Mike Turner, invited her to attend a party. "I had a pocket full of M&M's when he approached me the first time, I just took off. I met him at another party and he called me at 3 a.m. to ask me out. We dated for three years, until I finished my R.N. We got married on Oct. 19, 1976," Susan said.

Gerald Burke, a retired Shaw Media newspaper executive, shaped the lives of those around him by utilizing what his family called the "Triple F" – family, faith and friends.

Burke, 70, died in his Loves Park home on Monday, March 28, surrounded by his family and loved ones.

Burke was raised on his family's farm in Marengo, where his love for outdoors prospered. He later attended Judson University on a baseball scholarship. He played soccer and basketball, as well. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1973.

"You name it, he did it," his wife, Susan, said. Even in college Burke was versatile. His unique ability to give 110% with a smile became a staple throughout his life.

Burke worked for Shaw Media for 40 years, starting as a sports writer for the Marengo Beacon News, moving on to advertising sales for numerous papers within the company, including the Northwest Herald.

"Gerry was known for his versatility and expertise, he worked in circulation, advertising and publishing. He knew and understood every aspect of the newspaper industry. He cared about people. Journalism is all about relationships, he knew that," said Sam Fisher, a former Shaw Media executive and now retired Illinois Press Association president and CEO.

Burke was promoted to the director of excellence at Shaw Media's corporate office in Dixon, eventually landing his dream job in becoming publisher of the Morris Herald-News.

Burke had a unique ability to recognize talent within his company and build them up.

"Gerry Burke had a knack for recognizing talent and built an incredible team of journalists and staff during his time at the Morris Daily Herald. When he believed in you, you knew it. He elevated you, fed your ambitions and held you to them. I will forever be grateful for his confidence in me and credit him largely for the career path my life has taken," said Christina Van Yperen, president and CEO of the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Burke hired Van Yperen at the Morris Daily Herald in 2009, first in the marketing department and later as a reporter.

Upon his retirement in 2016, Burke went back to his roots and began assisting his brother, Jack, on the family farm. He enjoyed fishing and turkey and pheasant hunting. One of his favorite places to fish was in Chequamegon Bay, Wisconsin, with friends, sons and his favorite guide.

Family members say what Burke loved most was his family. He went to all of his children's sporting events, becoming the coach for his children's soccer and basketball teams. He never missed his grandchildren's basketball, soccer and softball games.

He was a bona fide "music man" challenging anyone to name that tune from the 1960s and 1970s, a few of his favorites being The Beatles and Queen, his wife said.

Burke's sense of humor and fun-loving spirit will be missed dearly by all who have loved him.

Memorial services were held Friday, April 1, at First Baptist Church of Machesney Park, 718 Harlem Road, Machesney Park, with the Rev. Heath Tibbetts officiating. Aunt Millie's Bakeries mourns the passing of President John F. Popp

John F. Popp, President of Aunt Millie’s Bakeries

FORT WAYNE, Indiana — Aunt Millie’s Bakeries is deeply saddened to announce the passing of its President John F. Popp, who died on Friday, July 31, at the age of 94. A third-generation member of the family business, John’s leadership, optimism, faith, and unwavering commitment to people helped shape the company and its culture for more than four decades.

John Franke Popp was born March 2, 1932, to Lucile and Les Sr. Popp. He grew up with his older brother, Les Jr., on Forest Park Boulevard in Fort Wayne and graduated from Northside High School in 1950. He went on to attend the University of Michigan, graduating in 1954, and entered the U.S. Army that same year. He served as a second lieutenant before returning home following his military service.

John was offered an opportunity to begin a career as an analyst with T. Rowe Price, but his path ultimately led him back to Fort Wayne and the family bakery. At his mother’s urging, he returned home to join the business — a decision that would shape not only his own life, but the future of generations of the Popp family and Aunt Millie’s employees.

Long before his career in baking, John developed a love for Lake Wawasee and water skiing, eventually becoming the Indiana state slalom water ski champion. It was at the lake that he met Esther Rolene, the love of his life. They married on June 19, 1960, and spent the next decades building a life together, raising two sons and creating countless memories with family and friends. Even with the demands of running a growing company, John made time for what mattered most, including cheering his sons on from the sidelines at their baseball and football games.

John F. Popp and his wife, Esther Rolene Popp

In 1967, John stepped away from the family bakery to pursue a career in real estate, where he developed the subdivisions of Devil’s Hollow, Manitou, Lakewood, West Hamilton Estates, White Loon, and Winding Brook. In 1980, he returned to Perfection Bakeries, where he helped guide the company through a period of significant growth and expansion. The company that would become known as Aunt Millie’s grew under his leadership into one of the largest family-owned baking companies in the United States.

John viewed the people around him as an important part of that success. He loved being part of the team and was known for his optimism, encouragement, and genuine care for employees. His leadership was not simply about growing a business; it was about building an organization where people could grow, contribute, and feel that they were part of something bigger than themselves.

A third-generation leader of the family-owned bakery founded in 1901, John was deeply committed to protecting and building upon the legacy established by his grandfather, John B. Franke. His influence also reached beyond Aunt Millie’s. He was a passionate advocate for independent bakeries across the country, working with industry organizations to strengthen and protect family-owned businesses. He believed in the importance of education and workforce development and encouraged lifelong learning within the company while supporting the next generation of leaders in the baking industry.

In recognition of his contributions to the baking industry, John was inducted into the Baking Hall of Fame by the American Society of Bakers and Engineers in 2021. He also served the state of Indiana after being appointed by Governor Mike Pence to serve on the Indiana Commission for Higher Education.

While John’s professional accomplishments were many, those closest to him knew that his faith and family were at the center of his life. He cherished Bible Study Fellowship and worshiped at The Chapel and Wawasee Lakeside Chapel. He was quietly generous and found joy in serving others through organizations including the Euell Wilson Center, Women’s Care Center, and Ratio Christi.

John enjoyed spring breaks in Florida, trips to Maine, his ’61 Corvette, and working on projects at the lake. He appreciated the simple pleasures of life, but most of all, he loved his family. His greatest legacy will not be measured solely by the company he helped build, but by the family he loved, the people he encouraged, the lives he touched, and the values he carried with him throughout his life.

“John Popp believed that success was built on people,” said Rick Brown, Chief Customer Officer. “He cared deeply about our employees, our customers, our communities, and the generations of families who have made Aunt Millie’s a trusted name. His leadership was defined by humility, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to doing what was right.”

John’s passing leaves a tremendous loss for the Popp family, the Aunt Millie’s family, and the many people and organizations whose lives he touched. While the company mourns his loss, Aunt Millie’s leadership team remains committed to carrying forward the mission, values, and legacy John championed throughout his life. Daily operations will continue uninterrupted as the company moves forward under its established leadership plan.

The Popp family extends its heartfelt appreciation for the many expressions of sympathy and support received during this difficult time.

Memorial service information will be shared at a later date.

Northbrook West/Citation Lake Stormwater Project earns highest-priority ranking from Metropolitan Water Reclamation District

Northfield Township Road District’s Phase II project placed in Group 1, the top tier, of MWRD’s 2026 Stormwater Partnership Program; construction could begin as early as 2027

NORTHBROOK, Illinois (July 21, 2026) — The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) has notified the Northfield Township Road District (NTRD) that its Northbrook West/Citation Lake Stormwater Improvements Phase II project (MWRD No. 2025-0022-SP) has been placed in Group 1, the highest-priority tier, of MWRD’s 2026 Stormwater Partnership Program funding cycle.

The notification, dated June 12, 2026, was issued by Catherine A. O’Connor, Ph.D., P.E., MWRD’s director of engineering. Under the program’s schedule, MWRD staff will engage Group 1 applicants in the coming months to confirm design and engineering progress, permitting status, land and right-of-way acquisition, and local-match budgeting before advancing projects to Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) negotiations. Construction on prioritized projects could begin as early as 2027, pending available funding.

“Northbrook West/Citation Lake has been a generational drainage challenge for the residents and roadways in that corridor, and this prioritization moves us a significant step closer to a permanent regional solution,” said Highway Commissioner Michael Korman. “Earning a Group 1 ranking from MWRD validates the engineering work our team and ERA Consultants put into Phase II — and it positions NTRD to deliver the next phase while limiting the cost burden on local property taxpayers and seniors on fixed incomes.”

Phase I of the Northbrook West/Citation Lake Stormwater Improvements is under construction and on schedule for substantial completion in August 2026, addressing the most pressing hydraulic deficiencies in the watershed. Phase II will build on that foundation with additional detention, conveyance, and water-quality improvements designed to reduce flood risk to homes and roadways throughout the Northbrook West corridor.

About the MWRD Stormwater Partnership Program
The Stormwater Partnership Program is the principal vehicle by which the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago co-funds capital stormwater infrastructure on public property across Cook County. Eligible projects include localized detention, storm-sewer and culvert upsizing, pumping improvements, drainage-way construction, and green infrastructure. Under standard program terms:
  • MWRD reimburses up to $4 million per project, paid over a two-year construction window.
  • The partnering local government must contribute a minimum 10% local match of eligible construction costs.
  • The local partner remains responsible for design, bidding, contract award, construction management, and long-term operations and maintenance.
  • Each partnership is formalized through an IGA requiring final approval by MWRD’s Board of Commissioners.
MWRD prioritizes applications based on the severity and frequency of documented flooding, the number of flood-prone structures benefited, project cost-effectiveness, design readiness, and community need. The agency has more than 280 stormwater-management projects completed or in active design or construction across Cook County, collectively protecting more than 18,000 structures.

Project Team and Next Steps
Design engineering for the Northbrook West/Citation Lake project is being led by ERA Consultants, with Mike Maslowski serving as the consulting project engineer. MWRD has designated Jack Chan of its Engineering Department as the point of contact for the Phase II application; he can be reached at 312-751-3214 or chant@mwrd.org. NTRD will continue to advance Phase II design, permitting, and right-of-way work in parallel with MWRD’s readiness review, with the objective of being IGA-ready when MWRD opens formal negotiations.

About the Northfield Township Road District
The Northfield Township Road District is an independent unit of local government established under the Illinois Highway Code, responsible for the construction, maintenance, and reconstruction of unincorporated roads and associated drainage infrastructure in Northfield Township, Cook County, Illinois. The district is led by Highway Commissioner Michael J. Korman, who was elected to the office in 2025. More information is available at ntroad.com.
