Former Trustee, Journalist, Author Loebbaka Passes Away

Published in the Glenview Journal on September 26, 2024

AuthorpicCharles "Chuck" Richard Loebbaka, 87, of Glenview, who served as a village trustee for a decade in the 1970s and '80s and worked as a journalist covering the village and North Shore in the '50s and '60s, died earlier this month.

"Chuck and family moved to Glenview, Illinois in 1963, and he and Diana raised their three sons there," Loebbaka's obituary said.  "He often spoke how happy he was to have settled in Glenview, with Elm Park next door for the kids to enjoy and Hoffman Elementary and Springman Junior High schools within walking distance."

Loebbaka served as a trustee on the Glenview Village Board from 1973 to 1983, and later went on to work at Northwestern University for more than 30 years, first as manager of media relations and then as director of media relations.

Fresh out of college at the University of Illinois Champaign, Loebbaka began a 10-year career as a journalist.  In 1959, he took a job as a reporter with Star Publications, Hollister, and Pioneer Press for the Glenview Announcements covering general news, features, municipal and regional government, police and crime, schools, and politics.  He later became the editor of the Glenview Announcements, editor of the Evanston Review, and executive editor of the 11 weekly newspapers covering North Shore communities.

Even in retirement, Loebbaka remained engaged in Glenview.

"He was a very engaged resident," Glenview Community Engagement Director David Just said.  "Probably because of his background in journalism, he was always engaged as a regular (communicating with the village).  He was always gracious, not overly critical."

He later worked in communications and public relations but never strayed from his passion for writing.

After retiring from Northwestern, he wrote three historical fiction novels set in 1940s World War II in Paris and Germany, with a theme of children and families living with the war and the Holocaust.

He also wrote three detective/crime novels featuring a former police officer solving crimes in Chicago Heights, in the late '50s and early '60s.

He was born Aug. 19, 1937, in Evanston, to Charles Edward Loebbaka and Mildred Jeanette (Hedstrom) Loebbaka, the first of three children, who grew up in Evanston together.  He passed away on Sept. 5, 2024.

Dave Simmons, executive director of Ride Illinois, emphasized the new format of lobbying and advocacy: “It’s important that elected officials hear from their constituents. Lobby Day is an opportunity for Illinois residents to voice their concerns related to biking and walking in their community.” The legislative goals of Lobby Day include advocating for bills that will increase safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. Springfield Mayor Misty Buscher shared, “I am honored to greet attendees to the 2025 Illinois Bike & Walk Summit. I look forward to the summit and also look forward to making Springfield a more bike/walk friendly community.”

With a strong foundation built on the educational and empowering sessions of day one, the day of lobbying will bring a buzz to Springfield with the hope of creating safer, more accessible active transportation options for all ages and backgrounds.
