Springfield craves high school and college sports coverage. And beyond the Ws, Ls, Xs, Os, our readers love good stories about student athletes and the adults who coach them. Help The State Journal-Register, the Illinois capital city's No. 1 news source, lead its sports staff and connect more readers to its online and print sports sections.
The sports editor will direct coverage strategies, edit copy and help reporters tell great stories in formats that resonate on all of our digital platforms and the newspaper. He/she will coordinate schedules and assignments for the full-time and part-time sportswriters and work closely with our photo staff to get great visuals. We want someone who also can guide and direct trend stories and projects. He/she also will cover events during busy seasons, such as high school football and basketball, and write a column as needed. Candidates must be adept at harnessing social media to push our coverage to our audience most effectively, and should be familiar with other digital tools to enhance our storytelling. Experience with basic video production and editing is a plus.
Applicants should have at least three years of editing or management experience and at least seven years' experience in journalism. A bachelor's degree is required. If this appeals to you, send a cover letter explaining your vision for our online and print sports sections, your resume and up to six samples of your best work to Angie Muhs, executive editor, angie.muhs@sj-r.com. No phone calls, please. The SJ-R/GateHouse Media is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
